The term remix refers to a kind of work that uses existing elements already created by other people and also adds new elements from the person(s) who is doing the remixing. A remix is considered a self-creation, even though the work uses original ideas already created by other people. Most of the time the scope of a remix is to repurpose another person’s work for a different kind of audience to enjoy it. For example, a remix can be a piece of music that is produced by combining parts of an existing piece of music with new sounds.
When remixing the creator of the remix has to be careful not to commit plagiarism. Usually copyrighted work that was used is defined either at the end credits or on the remix’s page. Remixing also plays a role in shifting someone from a passive consumer to a consumer/producer, where people add their own stuff to current work in order to spice it up to their and their fans liking. I noticed that this is currently happening throughout the Internet, especially in blogs or social media sites.
The website I created for my cyberspace and society could be considered a remix. While the site has some of my own pictures in it, most of the other pictures, layouts and borders I borrowed from other sites and Dreamweaver. I rearranged these so that the website could show my own idea at work. I also made sure to give credit where credit was due and put everything I used from other people and webpages on the reference page of my site.
My final audience was the teacher and her grade-book. This is another reason why I had to incorporate images that reflect more than just one theme, like art. The teacher may not be into art images so I remixed the art images of my site with other images like gardening, kitties and other stuff that she was into. In the end I repurposed other people’s work for a different kind of audience, her.
